Peat Market Size in the Netherlands

The Dutch peat market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, peat exports from the Netherlands expanded markedly to X tons, increasing by 6.4% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +107.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, peat exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +97.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) were the main destinations of peat exports from the Netherlands, together comprising 58% of total exports. Spain, Finland, the UK, Australia, Italy, Chile, Lithuania, Denmark, China and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +83.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for peat exported from the Netherlands were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the UK ($X), together accounting for 49% of total exports. Spain, Estonia, Australia, Italy, China, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Chile and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

China, with a CAGR of +85.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average peat export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of peat, when their volume increased by 22% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, peat imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of peat to the Netherlands, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, peat imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Estonia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Latvia (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Estonia (+20.6% per year) and Latvia (+11.9% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of peat to the Netherlands, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Estonia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Estonia (+10.7% per year) and Belgium (+3.6% per year).

The average peat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
