Quinoa Market Size in the Netherlands
After three years of growth, the Dutch quinoa market decreased by -39.7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of quinoa increased by 3.8% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +81.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, quinoa exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +34.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of quinoa exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 44% share of total exports. Austria, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, Greece, the UK, Croatia and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +84.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for quinoa exported from the Netherlands were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 45% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, Greece, Romania and Croatia, which together accounted for a further 49%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Austria, with a CAGR of +87.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average quinoa export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 48%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the UK ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) and Greece ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of quinoa, when their volume decreased by -17% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 56%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, quinoa imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Peru (X tons), Bolivia (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of quinoa imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 91% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +79.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest quinoa suppliers to the Netherlands were Peru ($X), Bolivia ($X) and Spain ($X), together comprising 86% of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +69.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average quinoa import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
