After two years of growth, the Dutch rapeseed oil market decreased by -10.7% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Rapeseed oil consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, rapeseed oil production dropped sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a dramatic decrease. In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of rapeseed oil, when their volume decreased by -20% to X tons. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rapeseed oil exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) were the main destinations of rapeseed oil exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 76% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for rapeseed oil exported from the Netherlands were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Ireland ($X), together comprising 74% of total exports. The UK, France, Spain, Sweden, Norway and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In general, export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rapeseed oil export price increased by +79.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to China ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of rapeseed oil decreased by -20.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, rapeseed oil imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest rapeseed oil supplier to the Netherlands, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, rapeseed oil imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-6.6% per year) and France (-6.3% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rapeseed oil to the Netherlands, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.5% per year) and France (-4.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average rapeseed oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rapeseed oil import price increased by +82.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
