Saccharin Market Size in the Netherlands

For the third year in a row, the Dutch saccharin market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -15.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a notable increase. Saccharin consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the Netherlands

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of saccharin and its salts decreased by -21.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 302% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, saccharin exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 291%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main destinations of saccharin exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Slovakia, Ireland, the UK and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +109.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for saccharin exported from the Netherlands were Poland ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +98.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average saccharin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 41%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands

Saccharin imports into the Netherlands shrank rapidly to X tons in 2021, falling by -35.5% on the year before. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, saccharin imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 283%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of saccharin imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 96% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +48.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest saccharin suppliers to the Netherlands were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports.

In 2021, the average saccharin import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, saccharin import price decreased by -32.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 57% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
