Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of styrene exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 59% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Poland, Turkey, Finland, Norway, Italy, the UK, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Greece, which together accounted for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for styrene exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together comprising 57% of total exports. The average styrene export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 77% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, styrene imports into the Netherlands contracted sharply to X tons, shrinking by -26.9% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 116%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, styrene imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 80%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest styrene supplier to the Netherlands, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, styrene imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fivefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-1.8% per year) and Germany (-9.0% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of styrene to the Netherlands, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-2.2% per year) and Germany (-13.5% per year).
