Over the period under review, total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +10.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 41%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of sugar exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, France, Israel, Ireland and the UK, which together accounted for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Spain (with a CAGR of +56.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for sugar exported from the Netherlands were Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 51% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Spain, Israel, Ireland and the UK, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +38.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sugar export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sugar Imports
Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, sugar imports into the Netherlands contracted to X tons, shrinking by -8.5% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of sugar imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 77% of total imports. Brazil, El Salvador, Colombia, India, Poland and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by El Salvador (with a CAGR of +81.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest sugar suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 70% share of total imports. Colombia, Brazil, India, El Salvador, Poland and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
El Salvador, with a CAGR of +71.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sugar import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 28%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
