In 2022, the Dutch sugary soft drink market decreased by -23.2% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Belgium (X litres) was the main destination for sugary soft drink exports from the Netherlands, with a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, sugary soft drink exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X litres), with a 14% share.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sugary soft drinks, when their volume decreased by -22.4% to X litres. Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.2% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X litres), Belgium (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main suppliers of sugary soft drink imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 77% share of total imports. France, Poland, the UK and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +61.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
