In 2022, the Dutch sugary soft drink market decreased by -23.2% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption showed a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sugary soft drink exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X litres) was the main destination for sugary soft drink exports from the Netherlands, with a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, sugary soft drink exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X litres), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belgium totaled +11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+12.4% per year) and the UK (+11.7% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for sugary soft drink exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together comprising 56% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +16.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sugary soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, reducing by -22.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 14%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sugary soft drinks, when their volume decreased by -22.4% to X litres. Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.2% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, sugary soft drink imports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X litres), Belgium (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main suppliers of sugary soft drink imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 77% share of total imports. France, Poland, the UK and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +61.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the largest sugary soft drink suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 74% share of total imports. France, the UK, Poland and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +51.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sugary soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
