Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tuna imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ecuador (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of preserved tuna to the Netherlands, accounting for a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved tuna imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mauritius (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ecuador totaled +9.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+44.4% per year) and Mauritius (+12.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest preserved tuna suppliers to the Netherlands were Ecuador ($X), Spain ($X) and Papua New Guinea ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports.

The average preserved tuna import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
