Whisky Market Size in the Netherlands
After three years of growth, the Dutch whisky market decreased by -32.3% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a notable increase. Whisky consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Whisky Production in the Netherlands
In value terms, whisky production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the Netherlands
In 2022, approx. X litres of whisky were exported from the Netherlands; growing by 30% against 2021 figures. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, whisky exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X litres) was the main destination for whisky exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, whisky exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X litres), threefold. France (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +55.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-6.8% per year) and France (+19.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest markets for whisky exported from the Netherlands worldwide, with a combined 25% share of total exports. The UK, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Among the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +60.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average whisky export price amounted to $X per litre, shrinking by -28.3% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
Whisky imports into the Netherlands reached X litres in 2022, picking up by 2.4% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, whisky imports reached $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The UK (X litres), the United States (X litres) and Germany (X litres) were the main suppliers of whisky imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, France, Ireland and Spain, which together accounted for a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +15.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest whisky suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 62% share of total imports. Belgium, France, Ireland and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Among the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +23.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average whisky import price amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -1.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Spain ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
