Yams Market Size in the Netherlands

The Dutch yams market expanded notably to $X in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Germany (X tons) was the main destination for yams exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, yams exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +19.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+3.0% per year) and France (-2.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for yams exports from the Netherlands, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +21.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+13.4% per year) and France (-0.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yams export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 36% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of yams decreased by -41.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 473%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, yams imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 355%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, Ghana (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of yams to the Netherlands, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, yams imports from Ghana exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X tons), with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ghana was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+32.8% per year) and Belgium (+37.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest yams suppliers to the Netherlands were Ghana ($X), China ($X) and Belgium ($X), together accounting for 91% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +48.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
