Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In 2021, the amount of almonds exported from New Zealand skyrocketed to X kg, with an increase of 164% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt slump. Fiji (X kg) was the main destination for almond exports from New Zealand, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, almond exports to Fiji exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, French Polynesia (X kg), twofold. Solomon Islands (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Fiji totaled +42.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: French Polynesia (+77.8% per year) and Solomon Islands (+42.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for almond exported from New Zealand were French Polynesia ($X), Fiji ($X) and Solomon Islands ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, French Polynesia, with a CAGR of +122.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average almond export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, almond export price increased by +59.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Solomon Islands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Samoa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+21.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into New Zealand
In 2021, supplies from abroad of almonds increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 544% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, almond imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 516% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Australia (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of almond imports to New Zealand, together accounting for 98% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of almond to New Zealand, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 19% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Fiji ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
