Cinnamon Market Size in New Zealand

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the New Zealand cinnamon market, when its value decreased by -11.2% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of cinnamon (canella) decreased by -6.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cinnamon exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 216% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Australia (X tons) was the main destination for cinnamon exports from New Zealand, with a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, cinnamon exports to Australia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cook Islands (X kg), sixfold. Fiji (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Australia stood at +36.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cook Islands (+11.5% per year) and Fiji (+87.2% per year).

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the key foreign market for cinnamon (canella) exports from New Zealand, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cook Islands ($X), with a 6.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Fiji, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Australia amounted to +43.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cook Islands (+12.3% per year) and Fiji (+79.9% per year).

In 2022, the average cinnamon export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 59% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 69%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vanuatu ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into New Zealand

In 2022, purchases abroad of cinnamon (canella) decreased by -9.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 20%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, cinnamon imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), India (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of cinnamon imports to New Zealand, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Australia, Sri Lanka, China and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), India ($X) and Australia ($X) were the largest cinnamon suppliers to New Zealand, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
