Australia (X tons) was the main destination for leather footwear exports from New Zealand, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, leather footwear exports to Australia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cook Islands (X tons), more than tenfold. Samoa (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Australia stood at -20.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cook Islands (+17.4% per year) and Samoa (+24.2% per year).
In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather footwear exports from New Zealand, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Australia totaled -17.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+6.7% per year) and the United States (-31.4% per year).

Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather footwear imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of leather footwear to New Zealand, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, leather footwear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (X tons), with an 11% share.
