After three years of growth, shipments abroad of heat exchange units decreased by -13.5% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, heat exchange unit exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 154% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units) was the main destination for heat exchange unit exports from New Zealand, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, heat exchange unit exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at +98.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-5.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+34.9% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for heat exchange units exports from New Zealand, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +97.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-5.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+40.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average heat exchange unit export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Australia ($X per unit) and the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per unit) and Fiji ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into New Zealand
In 2022, the amount of heat exchange units imported into New Zealand fell to X units, which is down by -6.8% compared with the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 121%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, heat exchange unit imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X units), the United States (X units) and Poland (X units) were the main suppliers of heat exchange unit imports to New Zealand, together comprising 49% of total imports. Sweden, Spain, Australia, Turkey, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Italy, Germany and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +28.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest heat exchange unit suppliers to New Zealand were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Spain, Australia, Turkey, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Italy, Germany and the UK, which together accounted for a further 41%.
Among the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +35.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average heat exchange unit import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 42%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Australia ($X per unit) and Japan ($X per unit), while the price for Malaysia ($X per unit) and Italy ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+10.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
