In 2021, overseas shipments of inks (excluding printing ink) decreased by -14.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Australia (X tons) was the main destination for ink exports from New Zealand, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, ink exports to Australia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Samoa (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Fiji (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Australia totaled +1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Samoa (+17.9% per year) and Fiji (-12.4% per year).
In value terms, Samoa ($X), Australia ($X) and Fiji ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for ink exported from New Zealand worldwide, together comprising 84% of total exports. These countries were followed by Vanuatu and Tonga, which together accounted for a further 6.8%.
Vanuatu, with a CAGR of +64.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ink export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 186% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Samoa ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vanuatu (+13.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of inks (excluding printing ink) were imported into New Zealand; increasing by 35% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 76%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, ink imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 241%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of ink imports to New Zealand, together comprising 70% of total imports.
