In 2021, the New Zealand paper label market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Australia (X tons) was the main destination for paper label exports from New Zealand, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Fiji (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the key foreign market for labels of paper or paperboard exports from New Zealand, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Fiji, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Australia totaled -4.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+15.8% per year) and Fiji (-2.3% per year).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into New Zealand
In 2021, supplies from abroad of labels of paper or paperboard decreased by -9.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper label imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Australia (X tons), China (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of paper label imports to New Zealand, with a combined 70% share of total imports. The United States, Thailand, Belgium and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +49.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paper label suppliers to New Zealand were Australia ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports. The United States, Thailand, Belgium and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

The average paper label import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 18% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Australia ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
