For the third year in a row, the New Zealand mixed fertilizer market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.5% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 114%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

New Caledonia (X tons), Tonga (X tons) and French Polynesia (X tons) were the main destinations of mixed fertilizer exports from New Zealand, together accounting for 70% of total exports. Samoa, Fiji, Vietnam, Cook Islands and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Samoa (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, New Caledonia ($X), Tonga ($X) and French Polynesia ($X) were the largest markets for mixed fertilizer exported from New Zealand worldwide, together comprising 57% of total exports. Samoa, Fiji, Vietnam, the UK and Cook Islands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Samoa, with a CAGR of +16.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average mixed fertilizer export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mixed fertilizer export price increased by +47.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 86% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to New Caledonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of mixed fertilizers imported into New Zealand declined rapidly to X tons, which is down by -27.4% against the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -39.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 37%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mixed fertilizer imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +69.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of mixed fertilizer to New Zealand, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, mixed fertilizer imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Morocco (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+21.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+22.4% per year).

In 2022, the average mixed fertilizer import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 62% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 69%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
