In 2022, the New Zealand particle board market decreased by -1.3% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Particle board consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Japan (X cubic meters) was the main destination for particle board exports from New Zealand, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, particle board exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X cubic meters), tenfold. New Caledonia (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan stood at +95.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-22.7% per year) and New Caledonia (-9.9% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for particle board exports from New Zealand, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by New Caledonia, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Japan stood at +59.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-28.1% per year) and New Caledonia (-10.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average particle board export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Fiji ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Fiji (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into New Zealand
In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of particle board were imported into New Zealand; increasing by 38% on the year before. Overall, imports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, particle board imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X cubic meters), China (X cubic meters) and Australia (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of particle board imports to New Zealand, with a combined 79% share of total imports. Brazil, Canada, Chile, Romania and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +147.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per cubic meter), while the price for China ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
