The New Zealand roasted malt market fell dramatically to $X in 2022, declining by -21.7% against the previous year. In 2022, purchases abroad of roasted malt decreased by -77% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 167%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 188% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.
