Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for sweet potato exports from New Zealand, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, sweet potato exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, French Polynesia (X tons), more than tenfold. New Caledonia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR stood at +93.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: French Polynesia (+34.0% per year) and New Caledonia (+69.0% per year).
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for sweet potatoes exports from New Zealand, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by French Polynesia ($X), with a 7.2% share of total exports. It was followed by New Caledonia, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR totaled +84.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: French Polynesia (+29.5% per year) and New Caledonia (+63.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sweet potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -28.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 108% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to New Caledonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Tonga ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
