In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Canada (X litres), the United States (X litres) and Fiji (X litres) were the main destinations of exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from New Zealand, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Australia, South Korea, Macao SAR and Tonga, which together accounted for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Macao SAR (with a CAGR of +31.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Fiji ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into New Zealand

Imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages into New Zealand shrank to X litres in 2022, with a decrease of -6.8% against 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Australia amounted to +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+4.2% per year) and China (+27.3% per year).
