The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Australia (X square meters) was the main destination for silk fabric exports from New Zealand, with a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, silk fabric exports to Australia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Tonga (X square meters), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Australia totaled -27.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tonga (-8.7% per year) and the United States (-43.0% per year).

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports from New Zealand, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tonga ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Australia amounted to -20.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tonga (-9.4% per year) and the United States (-42.5% per year).

The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($X per square meter) and Italy ($X per square meter), while the price for India ($X per square meter) and the UK ($X per square meter) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+20.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
