Activated Carbon Market Size in Nigeria

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Nigerien activated carbon market, when its value decreased by -28.8% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, activated carbon exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 265% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for activated carbon exports from Nigeria, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, activated carbon exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold.

From 2014 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany was relatively modest.

In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for activated carbon exports from Nigeria, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

The average activated carbon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep downturn. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands stood at $X per ton.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Jordan (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Nigeria

In 2022, purchases abroad of activated carbon decreased by -27.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 428%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, activated carbon imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 343% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of activated carbon imports to Nigeria, together comprising 77% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest activated carbon suppliers to Nigeria were the United States ($X), India ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +28.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average activated carbon import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
