Exports by Country
Benin (X tons) was the main destination for baby food exports from Nigeria, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, baby food exports to Benin exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ghana (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Benin amounted to +14.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+30.9% per year) and Germany (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Benin ($X), Ghana ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for baby food exported from Nigeria worldwide, together comprising 59% of total exports. Spain, the United States, Cameroon and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +117.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average baby food export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 40%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Benin (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nigeria
In 2021, purchases abroad of food preparations for infants decreased by -74.1% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 206% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, baby food imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 101% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main suppliers of baby food imports to Nigeria, with a combined 55% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Thailand, Brazil, Singapore, Portugal, Ireland and Barbados lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +88.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Barbados ($X), the UK ($X) and Mexico ($X) appeared to be the largest baby food suppliers to Nigeria, together comprising 37% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, China, Singapore, Portugal, Ireland, Thailand and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 37%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +78.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average baby food import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Barbados ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
