Leather Footwear Market Size in Nigeria
The Nigerien leather footwear market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. In general, the total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -17.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 39%. Leather footwear production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Nigeria
In 2021, exports of leather footwear from Nigeria reduced rapidly to X tons, with a decrease of -26.2% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 283% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather footwear exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 434%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cameroon (X tons) was the main destination for leather footwear exports from Nigeria, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, leather footwear exports to Cameroon exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X kg), ninefold. The United States (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Cameroon totaled -6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-9.3% per year) and the United States (+5.2% per year).
In value terms, Cameroon ($X), the United States ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest markets for leather footwear exported from Nigeria worldwide, together accounting for 35% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Congo, China, Austria, South Africa, Kenya, Canada, Ghana, Niger and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 23%.
Kenya, with a CAGR of +42.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather footwear export price amounted to $X per kg, rising by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per kg in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana (+36.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Leather Footwear Imports
Imports into Nigeria
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of leather footwear, when their volume decreased by -49.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, leather footwear imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 368% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of leather footwear imports to Nigeria, with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Vietnam, Italy, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Cote d'Ivoire and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +164.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest leather footwear suppliers to Nigeria, with a combined 45% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, the UK, India, France, Bangladesh, Germany, Vietnam, Cote d'Ivoire, the Netherlands and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 27%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +158.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average leather footwear import price stood at $X per kg in 2021, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 101%. The import price peaked at $X per kg in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per kg), while the price for Turkey ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+641.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
