Ginger Market Size in Nigeria
After two years of growth, the Nigerien ginger market decreased by -3.3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The average yield of ginger in Nigeria shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -2.1% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 71%. The ginger yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The ginger harvested area in Nigeria fell modestly to X ha in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to ginger production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of ginger increased by 135% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 5,687%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ginger exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 4,297% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), India (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) were the main destinations of ginger exports from Nigeria, together accounting for 34% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +64.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), India ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest markets for ginger exported from Nigeria worldwide, together comprising 38% of total exports. Sudan, the Netherlands, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, China and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
Sudan, with a CAGR of +62.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 95% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ginger Imports
Imports into Nigeria
In 2022, overseas purchases of ginger decreased by -37.3% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,177%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ginger imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports faced a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 840% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to Nigeria, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, ginger imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +24.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-9.2% per year) and the UK (-41.2% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the largest ginger suppliers to Nigeria, with a combined 92% share of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +17.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average ginger import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 106%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
