Canned Meat Market Size in Nigeria

In 2021, the Nigerien canned meat market decreased by -14.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. Canned meat consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, exports of canned meat from Nigeria reduced markedly to X tons, which is down by -32.8% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 10,836%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Ireland (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from Nigeria, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, canned meat exports to Ireland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ghana (X kg), fivefold. Cambodia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ireland amounted to +36.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+87.4% per year) and Cambodia (+55.4% per year).

In value terms, Ireland ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned meat exports from Nigeria, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Benin, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ireland totaled +41.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+56.0% per year) and Benin (+28.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average canned meat export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 143% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Nigeria

Canned meat imports into Nigeria fell remarkably to X tons in 2021, reducing by -64.3% against the previous year. In general, imports faced a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 223% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned meat imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 157% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

France (X tons), China (X tons) and Andorra (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned meat imports to Nigeria, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
