After two years of growth, the Nigerien cutting blade market decreased by -71.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of knives and cutting blades (for machines or for mechanical appliances) decreased by -64.2% to X kg, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 1,991% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cutting blade exports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 3,508% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Greece (X kg), Benin (X kg) and Italy (X kg) were the main destinations of cutting blade exports from Nigeria, together comprising 90% of total exports. These countries were followed by Cote d'Ivoire and the UK, which together accounted for a further 5.6%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cutting blade exported from Nigeria were Italy ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 82% of total exports.

In 2021, the average cutting blade export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -18.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 71%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+254.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nigeria

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of knives and cutting blades (for machines or for mechanical appliances) decreased by -79% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 199%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, cutting blade imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 128%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest cutting blade supplier to Nigeria, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, cutting blade imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+103.0% per year) and India (+14.4% per year).
