As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bovine and equine leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 141%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,320%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather of bovine and equine animals to Nigeria, comprising 20% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy stood at -15.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-7.4% per year) and Lebanon (+11.2% per year).
