In value terms, Niger ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for nitrates (excluding those of potassium) exports from Nigeria, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 58%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, nitrates imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nitrates to Nigeria, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, nitrates imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), fourfold. Norway (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia amounted to +33.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+10.9% per year) and Norway (+3.0% per year).
