In 2022, overseas purchases of orthopaedic appliances and splints decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 3,021%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orthopaedic appliances imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,080%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of orthopaedic appliances to Nigeria, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, orthopaedic appliances imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold.
