Papaya Market Size in Nigeria
The Nigerien papaya market reached $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In value terms, papaya exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 131%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Niger (X kg), the UK (X kg) and Germany (X kg) were the main destinations of papaya exports from Nigeria, with a combined 99% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of -7.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for papayas exports from Nigeria, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK stood at -1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Niger (+6.6% per year) and Germany (-7.6% per year).

In 2022, the average papaya export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -11.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 177%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, overseas purchases of papayas increased by 4.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 1,896% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, papaya imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 1,788% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of papaya to Nigeria, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, papaya imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Niger (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +54.5%.
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papayas to Nigeria, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.
