Pistachio Market Size in Nigeria

In 2022, the Nigerien pistachio market decreased by -9.3% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for pistachios exports from Nigeria, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 0.5% share of total exports.

From 2014 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria stood at -65.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-31.5% per year) and South Africa (-66.2% per year).

In 2022, the average pistachio export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -12.9% against the previous year. In 2022, supplies from abroad of pistachios decreased by -75% to X kg, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 244%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Turkey (X kg) constituted the largest supplier of pistachio to Nigeria, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, pistachio imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X kg), fourfold. Lebanon (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey stood at +61.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-32.8% per year) and Lebanon (-31.7% per year).

Turkey, with a CAGR of +45.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average pistachio import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 92% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
