Sorghum Market Size in Nigeria

The Nigerien sorghum market declined modestly to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Sorghum Production in Nigeria

In value terms, sorghum production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of sorghum in Nigeria dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 2,008%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Niger (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Nigeria, accounting for a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Niger exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Benin (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Niger stood at -29.4%.

In value terms, Niger ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Nigeria, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Niger amounted to -16.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sorghum export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -16.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 242% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Benin (+23.1%).

Imports into Nigeria

In 2022, purchases abroad of sorghum decreased by -36.4% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8,580%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sorghum imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 3,763% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of sorghum imports to Nigeria, with a combined 78% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +54.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the largest sorghum suppliers to Nigeria, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +43.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sorghum import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 58% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the United States ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
