In 2022, supplies from abroad of sweet corn prepared or preserved increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 441%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved sweet corn imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 604%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved sweet corn imports to Nigeria, with a combined 65% share of total imports. The UK, Hong Kong SAR, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +54.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sweet corn prepared or preserved to Nigeria, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 2.4% share.
