Mobile Phone Market Size in Nigeria
The Nigerien mobile phone market fell modestly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed pronounced growth. Mobile phone consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of mobile phones, when their volume decreased by -13% to X units. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 221% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mobile phone exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 244% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X units) was the main destination for mobile phone exports from Nigeria, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, mobile phone exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X units), twofold. The UK (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands totaled +9.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-29.0% per year) and the UK (+24.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for mobile phone exported from Nigeria were the Netherlands ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +29.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average mobile phone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 75%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Nigeria
In 2022, supplies from abroad of mobile phones was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 164%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mobile phone imports expanded to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 140%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X units), China (X units) and the United States (X units) were the main suppliers of mobile phone imports to Nigeria, with a combined 97% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of -1.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest mobile phone suppliers to Nigeria, together accounting for 98% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average mobile phone import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mobile phone import price increased by +72.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) and the United States ($X per unit), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) and the UK ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
