The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 276% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a sharp curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for cotton fabric exports from Nigeria, accounting for a 16% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton fabric exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Congo (X tons), fourfold. Benin (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at -11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Congo (-39.4% per year) and Benin (-23.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for cotton fabric exported from Nigeria were the United States ($X), China ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 48% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +43.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average cotton fabric export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 66% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 118% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Barbados ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+44.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nigeria
In 2021, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of cotton decreased by -19.2% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 158%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 160% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cotton fabric to Nigeria, accounting for a 12% share of total imports. Moreover, cotton fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Saudi Arabia (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Curacao (X tons), with a 0.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -17.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+5.0% per year) and Curacao (0.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of cotton to Nigeria, comprising 4.1% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 0.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Niger, with a 0.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -9.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-9.9% per year) and Niger (+8.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average cotton fabric import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 42% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 220%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Curacao ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+36.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
