Asparagus Market Size in Norway

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Norwegian asparagus market, when its value decreased by -3.3% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. Asparagus consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of asparagus was finally on the rise to reach X kg after six years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 278%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 249% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Russia (X kg), Sweden (X kg) and the Netherlands (X kg) were the main destinations of asparagus exports from Norway, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of -3.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for asparagus exported from Norway were the Netherlands ($X), Russia ($X) and Sweden ($X), together accounting for 80% of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+24.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of asparagus increased by 1.2% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 10%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Peru (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main suppliers of asparagus imports to Norway, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Italy, France and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +31.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of asparagus to Norway, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 13% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
