The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 952% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for biodiesel exports from Norway, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, biodiesel exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. Switzerland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden stood at +44.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-0.7% per year) and Switzerland (-2.7% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for biodiesel exports from Norway, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Sweden stood at +51.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+7.1% per year) and Switzerland (-2.1% per year).

The average biodiesel export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, biodiesel export price increased by +131.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
