In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Norwegian market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass, when its value decreased by -19.3% to $X. Moreover, glass bottle, jar and container exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X units), fivefold. The Czech Republic (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sweden totaled -48.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (-11.6% per year) and the Czech Republic (+54.0% per year).
In value terms, Sweden ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass exports from Norway, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Sweden amounted to -42.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+5.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+51.3% per year).

In 2021, overseas purchases of bottles, jars and other containers of glass increased by 13% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Denmark (X units), Sweden (X units) and Russia (X units) were the main suppliers of glass bottle, jar and container imports to Norway, with a combined 64% share of total imports. Germany, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
