In value terms, coffee extract exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,452%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for coffee extract exports from Norway, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee extract exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sweden stood at +3.5%.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for coffee extracts, essences and concentrates exports from Norway, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Sweden stood at +9.5%.

In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iceland (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -7.1% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Switzerland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee extract imports to Norway, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Spain, Sweden and Germany, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates to Norway, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Switzerland totaled -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-8.3% per year) and France (+7.4% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
