Date Market Size in Norway

The Norwegian date market reduced to $X in 2022, dropping by -14.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. Date consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

The average date export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+48.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of dates, when their volume decreased by -17.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, Iran (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of date to Norway, accounting for a 25% share of total imports. Moreover, date imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. Palestine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iran totaled +9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+16.5% per year) and Palestine (+13.1% per year).

In value terms, Iran ($X), the United States ($X) and Palestine ($X) were the largest date suppliers to Norway, together accounting for 50% of total imports. Israel, Tunisia, Germany, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +31.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average date import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
