Durum Wheat Market Size in Norway
In 2022, the Norwegian durum wheat market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. For the third consecutive year, Norway recorded growth in overseas shipments of durum wheat, which increased by 766% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6,801%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, durum wheat exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 3,245%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Norway, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden stood at -28.5%.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) also remains the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from Norway.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden amounted to -23.9%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -28.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Sweden.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Sweden amounted to +6.4% per year.
Durum Wheat Imports
Imports into Norway
In 2022, the amount of durum wheat imported into Norway skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 104% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 359% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 243% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Norway, with a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, durum wheat imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France stood at +54.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.5% per year) and Sweden (+34.0% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Norway, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France stood at +66.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+11.9% per year) and Sweden (+33.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +97.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
