Honey Market Size in Norway

In 2022, the Norwegian honey market decreased by -0.3% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +79.7% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, honey exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 7,263%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for honey exports from Norway, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, honey exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Switzerland (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Denmark (X tons), with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sweden stood at +70.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+111.2% per year) and Denmark (-21.5% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for honey exports from Norway, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Switzerland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden amounted to +56.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+86.7% per year) and Denmark (-8.1% per year).

The average honey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Norway

Honey imports into Norway reduced to X tons in 2022, falling by -13% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -15.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, honey imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 46%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Serbia (X tons), China (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main suppliers of honey imports to Norway, with a combined 68% share of total imports. Denmark, Argentina, Moldova and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest honey suppliers to Norway were Serbia ($X), China ($X) and Denmark ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. Zambia, Moldova, Argentina and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
