Inulin Market Size in Norway

The Norwegian inulin market surged to $X in 2021, picking up by 29% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +23.0% against 2016 indices. Inulin consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of inulin, when their volume decreased by -52.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 900% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, inulin exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 146%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for inulin exports from Norway, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, inulin exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X kg), ninefold.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden was relatively modest.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for inulin exports from Norway, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden stood at $X per ton.

From 2014 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iceland (-2.7%).

For the fourth consecutive year, Norway recorded growth in overseas purchases of inulin, which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, inulin imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +29.9% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 56%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of inulin to Norway, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, inulin imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium totaled +9.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+10.9% per year) and Denmark (+36.8% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of inulin to Norway, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Belgium stood at +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+10.4% per year) and Denmark (+19.5% per year).
