Exports by Country
Sweden (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of lithium battery exports from Norway, with a combined 42% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Turkey, South Korea, Lithuania, Estonia, Brazil and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 41%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +55.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for lithium battery exported from Norway were the United States ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 35% of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Sweden, Turkey, Finland, Brazil, South Korea, Poland, Denmark, Estonia and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +50.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average lithium battery export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (-3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Norway
In 2021, supplies from abroad of lithium cells ans batteries increased by 3.5% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 41%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, lithium battery imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest lithium battery supplier to Norway, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +31.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+43.8% per year) and France (+14.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest lithium battery suppliers to Norway were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +33.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
