Manuka Market Size in Norway

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Norwegian manuka market, when its value decreased by -0.3% to $X. In general, the total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +79.7% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, manuka production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 70%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of manuka decreased by -26.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 12,587%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manuka exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 7,263%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for manuka exports from Norway, with a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, manuka exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Switzerland (X tons), tenfold. Denmark (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden totaled +70.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+111.2% per year) and Denmark (-21.5% per year).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for manuka exports from Norway, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Switzerland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Sweden stood at +56.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+86.7% per year) and Denmark (-8.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average manuka export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Norway

Manuka imports into Norway reduced to X tons in 2022, falling by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -15.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manuka imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Serbia (X tons), China (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main suppliers of manuka imports to Norway, together comprising 68% of total imports. Denmark, Argentina, Moldova and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Serbia ($X), China ($X) and Denmark ($X) appeared to be the largest manuka suppliers to Norway, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Zambia, Moldova, Argentina and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +36.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average manuka import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
