Molluscs Market Size in Norway

In 2021, the Norwegian molluscs market increased by 1.5% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 49%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Norway

In 2021, the amount of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exported from Norway surged to X tons, increasing by 88% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Denmark (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Norway, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to Denmark exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Denmark was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+5.1% per year) and Spain (+37.6% per year).

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Spain ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest markets for molluscs exported from Norway worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Turkey, the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +742.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -11.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Norway

In 2021, molluscs imports into Norway surged to X tons, with an increase of 17% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, molluscs imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Canada (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to Norway, together accounting for 52% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to Norway, comprising 49% of total imports.
