For the fourth year in a row, the Norwegian sanitary towel and diaper market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.7% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the market value increased by 6% against the previous year. Sanitary towel and diaper consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp downturn. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Sweden (X tons) was the main destination for sanitary towel and diaper exports from Norway, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, sanitary towel and diaper exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sweden totaled +29.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (-28.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+14.6% per year).
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers exports from Norway, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden totaled +35.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (-14.4% per year) and Germany (+34.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sanitary towel and diaper export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 236%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Norway
After four years of decline, purchases abroad of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers increased by 0.6% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 2.6%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 5.4%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Sweden (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of sanitary towel and diaper imports to Norway, with a combined 74% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +24.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sanitary towel and diaper suppliers to Norway were Sweden ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together accounting for 66% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
