Whisky Market Size in Norway
The Norwegian whisky market reached $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, whisky exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sweden (X litres) was the main destination for whisky exports from Norway, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, whisky exports to Sweden exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Finland (X litres), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Denmark (X litres), with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sweden stood at +5.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+48.8% per year) and Denmark (+60.8% per year).
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for whisky exports from Norway, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden stood at +18.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+49.8% per year) and the UK (+24.6% per year).

Imports into Norway
In 2022, the amount of whisky imported into Norway rose to X litres, with an increase of 4.9% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whisky imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the UK (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to Norway, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, whisky imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ireland (X litres), twofold. The United States (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ireland (+4.9% per year) and the United States (+4.2% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to Norway, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ireland ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK totaled -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ireland (+0.3% per year) and the United States (+0.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whisky import price amounted to $X per litre, declining by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per litre), while the price for Canada ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
